Lyrics & Story Behind Song #9: “The Code”
“As we speak so we shall be. Speak your truth with sovereignty.
As ye think, so shall ye stand. Love and light are all I AM.”
During my first two years studying consciousness at Faith in Wellness Retreat Center, I was introduced to a tool called “spiritual laws.” Depending on your belief system, this term could mean anything. At the retreat center, a spiritual law was defined as a universal law that directed conscious evolution.
For example, one stated, “What you are aware of you have power over.” We can’t control what we’re unconscious of. Whatever we desire to change, we must first wake up to and own. Another example of a spiritual law was, “Energy is neither created nor destroyed.” This was good news. It meant, there was nothing lacking I had to “get” to evolve. Similarly, there wasn’t anything in me I had to “get rid of”. All my thoughts, feelings and experiences were valuable. The key was empowering myself to choose how I perceived and used them. A third law I’ll call, “What goes around comes around.” Without knowing exactly what that phrase meant, I sensed universal truth behind it. It didn’t matter whether you labeled that truth spiritual, natural, scientific or all three. Science might re-phrase it as, “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction”. Wiccans might describe it as, “Nature always seeks balance.” Believers in karma would say, “You reap what you sow.” Christians professed it as, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The basic law said, resist and you invite resistance. Conversely, to the extent you align in harmony with natural order, life flows. Applying spiritual laws like these in my life gave me rudders to steer by. That was a big help—since asking to expand my consciousness was like asking to be shifted out of my known reality into uncharted waters!
One law I heard emphasized again and again was “As ye speak, so shall ye be.” This law was a reminder of the power of our words. Coach Faith Bost further described it as, “Every word you speak is a prayer coming into manifestation.” A lot of coaching focused on helping us find, own and shift our language patterns. For example, if I was speaking from lack (“I want”, “I wish”, “I need”), I could shift and speak from abundance and sovereignty (“I have”, “I choose”). Similarly, whenever I spoke from ownership (“MY heart”), could I feel the powerful energetic difference between that and speaking from separation (“THE heart”).
During an EVEolution women’s retreat, I was cocooned in a supportive, conscious community of eight women for seven days. We got good at catching and revising our word codes. We noticed everything we spoke into existence, especially any words said after “I AM”. Whatever followed “I AM” expressed your highest choice for exactly who and what you chose to be.
Driving home at the end of the retreat, I was floating on cloud nine. I hadn’t given much thought to the fact that I was leaving a blissfully conscious environment to re-enter the “real” world. Then I stopped for coffee at a fast-food restaurant. As I walked in the door, I overheard the girl behind the counter jokingly tell her friends, “You know how I AM. I’M just TERRIBLE”. Her unconscious “I AM” statement hit me like a lightning bolt. I realized people all around me were speaking in unconscious language patterns. They had no idea what their words were creating. That wake-up call became verse one of my song, The Code.
Over the next three weeks I began paying close attention to Facebook posts and newscasts. I noticed what people were saying in elevators and grocery store lines. The more I listened, the more I realized conscious speech wasn’t about “saying right words”. It was about owning the creative power of our words. It was about embodying and speaking from a whole new octave of energy, intention and accountability. That insight became verse two of The Code. The spiritual law, “As ye speak so shall ye be,” became my chorus.
Speaking consciously required committing to a new way of being, a new level of responsibility for creating my life. I’d been taking consciousness classes, one after the other, much like I’d always taken college classes in the past. I was collecting credits. Surely just “one more course” or “one more eye reading” would graduate me to a new level of “certifiably enlightened”, right? Wrong. I realized that truly embodying this work was not about how many classes I’d taken. It was about how far I was willing to step up. Expanded consciousness required a moment-to-moment commitment to “never going back” to unconsciousness. I was asking to play where angels played. That was more than a little mind-boggling. That awareness became the bridge of The Code. The experience of repeatedly being made new was as inspiring as it was scary. My heart invited me to embrace an ever-expanding picture of what life could be. Every time I decreed and surrendered, some part of “old me” collapsed, while new levels of freedom, insight and love showed up. I was peeling an onion—and that onion was me.
Finally, I imagined the world as it might be if all of humanity woke up their codes of unconsciousness. What if everyone in the world owned how powerful their thoughts, words and feelings really were? What if every person committed to speaking only in ways that raised their own consciousness? In that imagined world I could walk into any restaurant and hear only conscious speech. That vision became verse three. The law “As we speak so shall we be” became more than the words to my chorus. It became a rule to live by and the true heart of the song.
Lyrics: The Code
Verse 1: I hear people talking, speaking in code. It’s all that they know—automatic.
“Can’t”, “Won’t”, “Never”—stories of need; patterns agreed to and believed since age three.
They don’t know they’re recreating illusions they’re restating.
Without tools for something higher, they sabotage their hearts’ desires.
CHORUS: As we speak, so we shall be. Speak your truth with sovereignty.
As ye think, so shall ye stand. Love and Light are all I AM. Love and light are all I AM.
Verse 2: No more co-dependence or “I don’t know how”. I feel my feelings in moments of now.
Thoughts and words remake me new. Miracles are what come through—
From the consciousness of one, every choice “already done”.
CHORUS: As we speak so we shall be. Speak your truth with sovereignty.
As ye think, so shall ye stand. Love and light are all I AM. Love and light are all I AM.
BRIDGE: Can you touch and stay, where angels play?
Can you dance with grace beyond time and space?
Ask your deepest heart of hearts (where this journey ends and starts).
Read the map within your eyes. See where your heaven lies,
And what you were born to love--all are you called to love.
Love will meet you where you stand. Recommit to highest choice.
From within “I am”, heed your inner voice.
See your world reclaimed and blessed, every time your heart says “Yes”--
Lessons learned, love returned, Joy and Happiness.
Read the map within your soul. Breathe, and Trust it to unfold…
WHAT you were born to love--all are you called to love.
Verse 3: I hear people talking, speaking in code, conscious and whole—ecstatic.
Every moment choosing with care, what’s new and different, alive and aware.
Wounds and gifts reveal their gold as destiny’s fulfilled.
You know, you can, you will.
CHORUS: As we speak so we shall be. Speak your truth with sovereignty.
As ye think, so shall ye stand. Love and light are all I AM.
Love is “I AM that I AM”. Love and light are all I AM.
